
The inception of Guru Nanak Girls College took place on the fifth birth
centenary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The college was established in 1970
by the Guru Nanak Education Trust under the aegis of the then Chief Minister
Justice Gurnam Singh. His son S. Gurbir Singh is the president of the trust
now. The main motives of the inception of this college:
1. Spread of Education among rural girl students.
2. Overall personality development of girl students.
3. Economic independence of girl students.
The
First academic session commenced in July, 1971 with Arts Stream, MA (Punjabi)
was added in 1981 followed by Commerce stream in 1982, Science stream in 1989,
Computer Science & Management BBA/BCA) in 1999, PG Diploma in Personnel
Management and Labour welfare and PG Diploma in chemical Analysis of Food
in 2002, PG Diploma in Computer Applications and Diploma in Fashion Designing
in 2003. The Institution holds the distinction of being the foremost centre
of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) with present strength of
1700 students. At present, there are approx. 2500 students studying in the
college who are taught by 92 efficient teaching staff members. There are also
60 non-teaching staff members both technical and administrative in nature.
The college is spread over 6 acres of land and the huge infrastructure include
95 class rooms, 12 Laboratories. Administrative Block, Seminar Room, Guest
Room, Tuck Shop, P.C.O., Photostat shop, Cycle Shed and Server room of Computer
network. There is a separate staff room for each Department with the facility
of Computer Access Point connecting it to the Centralized Computer System
of the college. The huge hostel building
houses approx. 500 students. It has 97 rooms, a Common room, Recreation room,
Health centre and Guest Room. The college is affiliated to Panjab University,
Chandigarh. The financial category of the college is that of grant in aid.
